Attorneys David Slossberg and Timothy Cowan, along with two members of the class of former Stone Academy students, Terencia Ridenhour and Shakima Glover, testified before the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee in support of Bill 7098 and Bill 7097. A Connecticut judge has approved a $5 million class action settlement between former students and the now-defunct Stone Academy. This is a significant victory for a class of over 1,000 students and Hurwitz Sagarin Slossberg & Knuff (HSSK).

Q: How did you get involved with the CUTPA Treatise since joining HSSK?
A: When I joined HSSK, one of the things I knew about the firm was that it had a specialty in handling CUTPA cases, and that Partner David Slossberg was a co-author of the treatise.  David and I worked on some CUTPA claims together, which I really enjoyed.  He invited me to join the team and become a co-author, which thrilled me.  Over time, my role evolved from casual support to taking ownership of several key sections, conducting comprehensive case research, and ensuring our content is as current and impactful as possible.

The Waterbury Superior Court granted preliminary approval of the $5 million settlement that the HSSK team, led by Partner David Slossberg, successfully negotiated in the high-profile class action lawsuit. This settlement represents a significant step toward justice for nearly 1,000 former Stone Academy students. The school abruptly closed in 2023 after nearly 150 years of operation, leaving these students stranded without their nursing degrees and recourse for tuition and fees already paid.

Law360 has reported that Roller Bearing Co. of America Inc., a Connecticut-based roller bearing manufacturer, has settled its trade secret lawsuits against HSSK’s client Multicut North America Inc. and RTX. The cases, centered on allegations of misuse of proprietary information, have been resolved after prolonged negotiations.

David Slossberg served as a guest speaker for an arbitration class of students at Quinnipiac Law School. The interactive Q&A-style lecture gave students firsthand insights into the complexities of arbitration and real-world cases.

The lawsuit, which sought relief on behalf of a proposed class, catalyzed substantial changes to the state’s carceral lien statute and led to favorable outcomes for the plaintiffs.

NBC Connecticut, WTNH News-8, and WFSB Eyewitness News reported on a virtual hearing in which Stone Academy’s former president and co-owner Joseph Bierbaum testified for the first time about the nursing school’s abrupt closing back in February. The hearing concluded on October 19, 2023.

David Slossberg and Erica Nolan secured approval for Trinity Health Of New England Emergency Medical Services, Inc. to expand its ambulance services to serve Johnson Memorial Hospital, a Trinity Health member facility in Stafford Springs, CT. 

Law360 recently reported on a proposed shareholder class action lawsuit in which HSSK represents the plaintiff, Katelyn Martin, a BioXcel Therapeutics Inc. investor. In the lawsuit filed in New Haven federal court, Martin claims BioXcel, along with its CEO Vimal Mehta and CFO Richard Steinhart, failed to disclose issues to investors and made materially misleading statements.

The law firm claims the defendant violated the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (“CUTPA”) by failing to follow through on a contract guaranteeing tens of thousands of unique views of the firm’s TikTok account.
