Partner Gary Phelan Featured in AARP Article on Best States for Older Workers

05/11/2026

Hurwitz Sagarin & Slossberg partner Gary Phelan was recently quoted in AARP's article examining the best states for older workers in 2026. Connecticut ranked fifth on the list, which analyzed factors including median income for workers 65 and older, remote work opportunities, and age discrimination complaints.

In the article, Phelan shared his perspective on the evolving nature of work and retirement. "We need to retire the word 'retirement' because it just doesn't fit anymore," he noted, reflecting on his 36 years practicing law in Connecticut.

The AARP article highlights a significant shift in the American workforce: more than 11.6 million Americans age 65 and older are currently employed, representing a 132 percent increase since 2004. Recent research shows that 41 percent of workers age 50 and older cite affording everyday living costs as their main motivation for remaining in the workforce.

Phelan's practice at HS&S focuses on employment law, including workplace discrimination and age-related employment disputes. His insight reflects both his professional expertise and his personal commitment to Connecticut's legal community.
